Hanging Your Lavender to Dry

Hanging lavender to dry It is the most popular and traditional method of drying lavender. It's also an attractive method, if you prefer the rustic look of bunches of herbs hanging around your house.
1. Cut the lavender, leaving at least of six inches of stem left.
2. Gather and tie them together with yarn, twine, thread, twist ties, rubber bands, or floral wire. Tie the stem firmly but not too tightly, leaving an inch or two of stem above the tied area.
3. Hang the lavender upside down on a hook on a wall or door, or on a clothesline between two points on the wall, using a piece of string. The best spot to hang is one that is not in direct sunlight, is not too hot or cold, and is preferably not humid.
4. Allow your lavender flowers to dry for a week to ten days.
Using a Screen

A screen is an easy method to sell lavender. To dry lavender with a screen, find a room that isn't too hot or cold and isn't humid, just like you would when hanging it.
1. Place a clean window screen flat on a flat platform with free air beneath (you can elevate it from a flat surface with two books or bricks, one for each side of the screen).
2. Arrange the lavender stems in a single layer on the screen.
3. Cover the tops of the stems with a cotton sheet or a small cotton towel to protect them from dirt and debris.
4. Allow the lavender to dry for seven to ten days.
Using a Dehydrator
@garden_therapy |
It simply takes a few of hours to dry lavender in a food dehydrator. But, because lavender has such a strong perfume, the scent may remain in the dehydrator. So, some craftspeople have a separate dehydrator only for flowers.
1. Turn your dehydrator to 100 degrees and arrange your lavender stems in a single layer on the tray.
2. Check the lavender for drying after two hours. If it's still wet, check it every 15 minutes. It should take no more than three hours.
Using an Oven to Dry Lavender
@lavenderfarming |
Although not as fast as a dehydrator, drying lavender in the oven is still a rather quick method.
1. Preheat the oven to 110 degrees F.
2. Arrange your lavender stems on a cookie or baking sheet. If you want, lay down a piece of parchment paper first.
3. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
4. Remove the sheet after one hour and carefully turn the stems over to let them to dry more evenly.
5. Continue rotating the lavender every hour for three more hours.
6. Turn off the oven after a total of four hours. Remove the baking sheets from the oven after the oven has totally cooled.
How to Store Dried Lavender
@kellogggarden |
Dried lavender keeps best in glass jars stored in a cold, dark area like a closet or pantry. Other airtight containers, such as plastic food containers or resealable bags, can be used, although glass is preferred. As long as the plants are entirely dry, airtight containers will keep the lavender aroma the longest and should prevent mold and mildew from growing.
